Dr. Joseph Kiyuka Nyaundi is an accomplished environmental scientist and hydrobiologist. He is a Senior Research Scientist (SRS) in the Limnology Science Department at the Kenya Marine & Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI). He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree, PhD, in Limnology Science, specializing in monitoring and assessment of organochlorine pesticides residues/degrades in contaminated sites and pesticides risks in aquatic organisms from Kisii University, Kenya, synthesizing aquatic ecosystems health, fisheries production and aquaculture development in the Blue Economy space.

He has a research expertise focused mainly on pesticides and trace metals risks on aquatic ecosystems, environmental conservation and impacts of climate change, public health and aquaculture. He received his M.Sc in Sustainable Development from the Masinde Muliro University of Science & Technology (MMUST) focused on synthesis of heavy metals in farmed fish, water and sediment core; and a B.Sc in Zoology from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, (UEA), Eldoret, Kenya. He has participated as a Research Scientist in regional and national internationally funded projects, including the Kenya Belgium Joint Project (KBJP); European Union-Lake Victoria Fisheries Research Project (EU_LVFRP), Implementation of Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) and the Lake Victoria Environment Management Project (LVEMP II) in Lake Victoria Basin.

His specific areas of expertise include:

• Limnology and hydrobiology: Analysis of organochlorine pesticides bio-accumulation and bio-magnification dynamics, synthesis of pesticides risks on environmental and public health in contaminated sites, and determination of aquatic nutrient concentrations.
• Climate Resilience and Blue Economy: Assessment of climate risks on existing aquatic ecosystems and systems of integration
• Integrated water resource management and environmental pollution.
• Fisheries production: He has also worked on fish biology and ecology; post-harvest loses of fish and fish products

• ▹ 1998-1999: Successfully held position of Cruise Leader in Scientific Research Surveys in the Lake Victoria Fisheries Research Project (LVFRP) in Lake Victoria, Kenya
• ▹ 2003-2006: Station Coordinator/Centre Director – Appointed to hold position of Centre Director & be accountable to the Director General KMFRI for all research activities, facilities and staff at one of KMFRI's Aquaculture stations (Kegati Aquaculture Station); whereby designed and implemented facilitated individual and group research project proposals; Analyzed scientific datasets, prepared and presented research reports and scientific papers in seminars, workshops, conferences and in peer reviewed publications; Supervised a team of significant numbers of KMFRI Employees in Kegati Aquaculture Station and its Field Staff collecting Scientific and Socio-economics data for reporting and dissemination purposes
