Linet Kiteresi Imbayi is a Marine Scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), specializing in marine pollution, phytoplankton ecology, harmful algal bloom (HAB) biotoxins, and seafood safety. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences and a Master of Philosophy in Environmental Studies (Environmental Health), qualifications that established her expertise in aquatic ecosystems, environmental contaminants, and public health. Her research focus is on biogeochemical processes in coastal environments, including sedimentation, heavy metals, eutrophication, Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), and toxin accumulation in marine biota. With advanced training in radiochemistry, biochemistry and seafood safety, she integrates laboratory analytics with spatial data interpretation to strengthen Kenya's national monitoring frameworks.

She has contributed to several national and international initiatives, including International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)‑supported projects on HAB sampling, toxin quantification, and radio‑assay techniques and Blue carbon sequestration in marine environments. She coordinates fieldwork, refines extraction protocols, trains research teams, and manages collaborative sample processing across institutions. As Kenya's IAEA project counterpart, she generates evidence‑based data that informs seafood safety policies and coastal resource management.

Her achievements include developing seafood safety protocols, producing scientific documentation for marine spatial planning, and supporting climate‑responsive ecosystem management. Her work has improved laboratory reliability, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and strengthened Kenya's capacity in blue food safety and marine pollution assessment. Beyond research, Linet is committed to scientific communication, mentorship, mariculture training, and community outreach. Her professional interests include marine ecosystem modeling, climate impact communication, blue carbon conservation, applied radiochemistry, and sustainable fisheries development.

 
Research & Administrative Responsibility
  • Coordinate and conduct marine ecological research with a focus on phytoplankton ecology, harmful algal blooms (HABs)
  • Lead field sampling campaigns across coral, seagrass, and mangrove ecosystems, ensuring methodological accuracy and adherence to KMFRI protocols
  • Perform laboratory analyses for microalgae, epiphytic communities, and seafood safety assessments, including toxin screening and phytoplankton identification
  • Support blue carbon research through monitoring of carbon sequestration processes that contributes to coastal carbon budgets
  • Train junior staff and students in sampling techniques, microscopy, taxonomic identification, and laboratory safety
  • Prepare scientific reports, manuscripts, and technical briefs for internal and external stakeholders, including regional and international collaborators
  • Support grant development, budgeting, and progress reporting for ongoing research projects
  • Organize training sessions, workshops, and capacity‑building activities for staff and community partners
  • Data compilation and reporting for SDG 14.1.1b
