Miriam is a Senior Research Scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), where her research centres on fish aquaculture, fish nutrition, and the environmental interactions of farmed systems, spanning milkfish, rabbit fish, tilapia, seaweed value chains and recently domestication trials for freshwater prawn. She has led and contributed to on-station and on-farm trials on fingerling performance, feed comparison, stocking density, and has studied the socio-economic dimensions of mariculture adoption among coastal communities. Miriam's work addresses key challenges such as optimizing feed efficiency in hatchery and grow-out systems, and improving fish health through working closely with stakeholders, government agencies, and conservation groups to design and implement sustainable aquaculture practices. Mirriam's work has been supported by grants including the MASMA Blue Growth Initiative on silver pompano and rabbitfish farming project; Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems (COSME) project and the Marine Research Grant Programme. She has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and policy briefs on seaweed and mud crab farming, and has presented her research at regional and international conferences. She collaborates widely across KMFRI's research Directorates and with partner institutions in the Western Indian Ocean region.
