Lake Victoria Marine Spatial Plan briefing meeting
The Principal Secretary for Blue Economy and Fisheries Madam Betsy Muthoni Njagi today attended a briefing meeting on Lake Victoria Marine Spatial Plan in relation to cage culture suitability under the Sustainable Activities in Water Areas (SAWA) Project. The project, funded by Gatsby Africa, is domiciled in the State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries (SDBE&F). KMFRI is the lead agency in its implementation. Other implementing partners include Kenya Fisheries Service (KeFS), Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), National Lands Commission (NLC) among others.
SAWA will employ spatial planning methodologies to promote ecosystem friendly framework for managing Lake Victoria. This will enhance decision-making and address issues related to the current multiple lake use situation.
KMFRI was represented by the CEO Prof James Njiru. Also present were Director FreshWater Systems, Dr Christopher Aura, Assistant Director Limnology, Dr Chrispine and scientists who are members of the SAWA Technical Committee
