Dr. Kevin Obiero

Dr. Kevin Obiero is a Research Scientist currently working as the Centre Director at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, Sangoro Station. Dr Obiero holds a PhD Degree in Natural Resources and Life Sciences (with Distinction) from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria; MSc and BSc Degrees in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences both from Moi University. He is self-driven with outstanding organizational and multi-tasking skills, and excellent interpersonal skills, which has enabled him to support and encourage colleagues, build, and maintain good working rapport with donors and stakeholders.

His academic and professional work experiences span 16 years in fisheries and aquatic sciences. He has significantly contributed to fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic research in Kenya and beyond. For instance, he was recognized for exemplary performance for the third consecutive time by the Institute and was the best performer in bringing funds during FY 2019/2021 through development of donor funded collaborative research projects at national, regional and global levels.

Dr Obiero has attended several specialized professional training courses and gained extensive leadership and project management experience by completing Strategic Leadership Development Program (SLDP), Senior Management Course (Kenya School of Government) and Post-Graduate Diploma in Project Management (Kenya Institute of Management (KIM). He has also participated in advanced training for governance and policy-oriented studies in Africa. The professional training has significantly strengthened his research versatility and administrative capability. He has also significantly contributed to fisheries, aquatic resource management and aquaculture landscape in Kenya and beyond. For example, he is privileged to be a member of the Aquaculture Regional Working Group (ARWG) for the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) and a member of the Training Selection Committee (TSC) for the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP). He is currently a Principal Investigator and collaborator on five funded collaborative research projects.

Dr. Obiero has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and presented talks and papers in several local and international scientific conferences. The body of research include 32 peer-reviewed journal articles, 8 published books (edited volumes), 16 book chapters, 5 policy documents (policy briefs, policy-oriented reports), and other material (e.g., book reviews, scientific proceedings). Together, this body of work has received >560 citations on Google Scholar and an H-Index of 13. He is currently receiving >100 citations/year on Google Scholar and over 22,000 readers on Research Gate. He is also an Editor and Reviewer of several international Peer-Reviewed Journals including PLOS ONE, Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems and Aquatic Foods, People and Nature, Journal of the World Aquaculture Society, Limnologica, Lakes and Reservoirs, Journal of Great Lakes Research, among others.

Internationally, Dr Obiero’s leadership qualities and broad experience have been recognized by top organizations. I’m currently the Board Chair of the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education (ACARE), a highly collaborative organization whose goal is to positively influence policy and management on Africa's Great Lakes by executing a long-term network of freshwater experts to strengthen science in Africa. In addition, he is a Board Member of the International Institute for Sustainable Development Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA), the world's freshwater laboratory comprised of 58 small lakes and their watersheds set aside for scientific research in Canada.

Research Interests: Dr Kevin Obiero’s research explores how social, economic, and institutional drivers shape the ways in which people use, perceive, and govern natural resources. I have conducted multi-institutional, interdisciplinary and socioecological research leading to successful governance of fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic resources, private sector-led market systems development, fish trade, marketing, value addition, and post-harvest loss reduction, blue economy, gender-based value chain analysis, policy-oriented research and advocacy. He is also involved in developing, validating and upscaling climate smart aquaculture technologies, innovations and management practices (TIMPs) to significantly contribute to food and nutrition security.
